in class
My biggest issue with the flipped classroom is when students come to class and are expected to sit at their desk and work on a worksheet or activity, individually or in groups. In my opinion, this is an extremely unauthentic learning experience for the students.
It is important that the students are engaged in an activity during class time that enhances student learning by allowing them to form connections to the previous nights video.

It's time for ...
chemistry compound composer!
In this game students are provided with playing cards which they will use to create properly written chemical word equations and then a proper balanced chemical equation. This will engage students in their learning in a way that it more effective than a drill and skill worksheet.
How to play:
1. Students will be placed in partners.
2. Each partner will draw a card, from these cards drawn they will form a molecular or ionic compound and set these aside together - this will make up their first reactant.
3. Each partner will draw a second card, from these cards drawn they will form a molecular or ionic compound and set these aside together - this will make up their second reactant.
Now that the students have their two reactants ...
4. Students will react the two compounds together to form their products, including correct states.
5. Students will then balance their chemical equation
6. Students will write the proper chemical word equation
**It is expected that students can go from chemical word equation to a balanced chemical equation and vice versa, challenge students to be accountable and ensure they can do both.
Reflection - Blog Post
After students have played the game have students reflect on the experience (this could be done at the end of class or at home, depending on what technology is available to students in class). Have students respond to the following questions:
1. Did this game serve to increase your understanding of the topic?
2. On a scale of 1 to 3, self-assess your understanding of the topic (with 1-I have no idea what's going on, 2-it's coming but I need some work, 3-I've got it and am ready to move on). If you are still struggling with this concept, what will you do to become a master?

Peggy Au is an educator who provides several great activities that are already created and ready for use in the classroom on her website. This could be a useful resource to consult when looking for activities to engage students in a flipped, or traditional, classroom.
